These data are made available under the conditions of the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 3.0 License: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ 5) DATA SOURCE -------------------------------------------------------- Data are derived from NOAA AVHRR Red and Near Infra-Red reflectances. Reflectances were calibrated using the invariant-cover-triangle methodology (Donohue et al., 2008). This method makes relative calibrations for both atmospheric interferences and sensor calibration errors to produce data suitable for long-term vegetation dynamics analyses. Pathfinder AVHRR Land (PAL) data (0.08 degree resolution), spanning July 1981-April 1994, have been combined with High Resolution Picture Transmission (HRPT) data (0.01 degree resolution), spanning February 1995-October 2011. When the HRPT data are supplied at 0.08 degree-equivalent resolution, the original 0.01 degree HRPT data have been resampled to 0.08 degrees by averaging the data into 64-pixel squares which approximately align with overlying PAL pixels. 6) DATA INFORMATION -------------------------------------------------------- Data are AVHRR-derived monthly fraction of Photosynthetically Active Radiation (400 nm to 700 nm) absorbed by vegetation (fPAR). Persistent and recurrent fPAR may have also been supplied along with total fPAR. Persistent fPAR approximately represents non-deciduous perennial vegetation and recurrent fPAR approximates deciduous, annual, and ephemeral vegetation. The exact ecological interpretation of these two variables needs to be done regionally. Persistent and recurrent fPAR are derived from total fPAR (ftot = fper + frec). Each pixel's persistent fPAR is calculated by applying a moving minimum across that pixel's total fPAR time-series. Recurrent is then calculated for that pixel as the difference between total and persistent; if you use these data please also cite Donohue et al. (submitted), in addition to (Donohue et al., 2008) as discussed in "CITATION" above. Data may also be supplied as fractional cover or LAI.Fractional Cover (FC) or Leaf Area Index (LAI) derived from fPAR may also have been provided. Total fPAR varies between 0.0 (no vegetation cover) and 0.95 (maximum vegetation cover). It is approximately linearly related to fractional vegetation. Fractional Cover (FC) is a linear function of fPAR (Asrar et al. 1984; Carlson and Ripley 1997; Lu et al. 2003). By making the assumption that when fPAR is 0, FC = 0.0 and that when fPAR is 0.95 (the maximum possible value), FC = 1.00, FC can be estimated as FC = fPAR/0.95. LAI data were calculated as as a non-linear function of FC, following the method of Choudhury (1989) in which Percent Cover was originally calculated from LAI as PerCov = 100 * (1 - exp(-LAI/2)). Therefore, LAI = 2 * ln(100/(100-(FC*100))). A maximum threshold was applied to the LAI data such that LAI values above 6 where set to 6. ***It should be noted that estimates of LAI derived from fPAR (or NDVI) are reasonably reliable for sparsely vegetated areas (up to an LAI of around 3). As LAI increases above this value, such estimates of LAI become increasingly unreliable (see Carlson and Ripley (1997) and Lu et al. (2003)). In addition, none of these LAI data have been calibrated to field measurements and no quantitative estimations have been made regarding the accuracy of these LAI data (we'd be keen to get feedback if anyone performs any kind of accuracy assessment).*** 7) DIRECTORY, FILENAME AND DATA FORMATS ------------------------------------------------------- The internet site has several levels of subdirectories. The first level denotes the dataset version; the second level denotes the variable type; and the third denotes the data resolution. For example: ./ v5/ Total_fPAR/ 1km/ 8km/ Persistent_fPAR/ 1km/ 8km/ Recurrrent_fPAR/ 1km/ 8km/ The 1km and 8km subdirectories contain files for each month. Filenames of individual month files have the following format: Region_Variable_SpatialRes_mthNNN_YYYYMM_Version where: Region = all Australia Variable = ftot is total fPAR (persistent fPAR is fper and recurrent fPAR is frec) SpatialRes = 1km is the 0.01 deg. resolution data and 8km is the 0.08 deg. data NNN = each month has been assigned a sequential month number starting at 000 (January 1981). See list below; note that months 0 through to 5 (Jan-Jun 1981) have no data YYYYMM = the year and month of the image. (YYYY = Year number and MM = month number [01 to 12]) Version = version of the dataset For example: Aust_ftot_1km_mth178_199511_v5 The content of each subdirectory (grouped by decade) is also available as zip files with name      Region_Variable_SpatialRes_YYYY-YYYY_Version.zip where the zip filename elements are as for the individual filenames (above). Data are supplied as individual monthly images, in the following formats: Variable Data format File format -------- ------------------------ fPAR byte ENVI FC byte ENVI LAI 32-bit float ENVI Individual monthly images have the extension ".flt". If fPAR data are stored in byte format, they are converted to integers ranging between 100 and 195 according to the method of Roderick et al. (1996). That is, fPAR[integer] = (fPAR + 1) * 100. Actual fPAR values can be recovered by dividing by 100 and subtracting 1 (The true range of fPAR values is between 0.0 and 0.95). No data is set to 0. If fPAR data are stored as floating points, they are scaled between 0.0 and 0.95, and no data is -999.0. If FC data are stored in byte format, they are scaled between 100 and 200, and no data is 0. Actual FC values range between 0.0 and 1.0 and can be recovered by dividing by 100 and subtracting 1. If FC are stored as floating points, they are scaled between 0.0 and 1.0, and no data is -999.0. LAI are stored as 32-bit floating points. No data is -999.0 8) GEOGRAPHICAL COVERAGE ------------------------------------------------------- Data are unprojected, in geographic decimal degrees, referenced to WGS84. The 0.08 deg data has the following spatial extent (coordinates of the cell centres in decimal degrees; the cell outer edge coordinates are in square brackets): Lower left = 110.00, -45.04 [109.96, -45.08] Upper right = 155.04, -10.00 [155.08, -9.96] Number of columns = 564 Number of rows = 439 The 0.01 deg data has the following spatial extent (coordinates of the cell centres in decimal degrees; the outer cell corner coordinates are in square brackets): Lower left = 110.000, -45.000 [109.995, -45.005] Upper right = 155.000, -10.000 [155.005, -9.995] Number of columns = 4501 Number of rows = 3501 9) DATA QUALITY ------------------------------------------------------- Some months in the PAL data series have had data from portions of the country masked out due to poor data quality. These months and the approximate regions covered by masks are indicated in the list at the end of this file (see Donohue et al., 2007 for full details). No assessment of accuracy has been performed on this data although the greatest possible precision of AVHRR-derived NDVI/fPAR data is around 0.01-0.02. Spatial accuracy of the HRPT LAC data is to within half a pixel. 10) VERSION INFORMATION ------------------------------------------------------------------ Version 5 was created as an update to version 4 - extending it to October 2011. The global thresholds used to rescale NDVI to fPAR were recalculated for the HRPT (0.01) data. This means the fPAR data values for the months within the 1992-2006 period are likely to differ from values in the same months in version 4. All data from the GAC (0.08) data are the same as version 4. Version 4 was created in order to update the persistent and recurrent fPAR data (7 July 2008). A coding error was found in the program used to create the ftp version of the dataset. Whilst this would have only affected the persistent and recurrent data, all variables have been recalculated. Version 3 is the data produced using the method described in Donohue et al. (2008). This version was created in March 2008, and included minor refinements to V2 to address feedback from the Remote Sensing of Environment external reviewers. Version 2 is the data produced using the method as described in Donohue et al. (2007). Version 1 is a prototype data product created during the development of the calibration methodology. 11) REFERENCES ------------------------------------------------------------------ Asrar G, Fuchs M, Kanemasu ET, Hatfield JL (1984) Estimating absorbed photosynthetic radiation and leaf-area index from spectral reflectance in wheat.
